How to measure audiences across platforms consistently

You cannot add up likes, views and reposts across platforms and call it an audience. Each platform defines engagement differently. A consistent cross-platform read uses a shared layer instead: the themes, emotions and tensions people express, wherever they post. Measure what audiences say and feel, then compare platforms on that common footing.
Why is cross-platform measurement so hard?
In the conversations we analyse among marketers, one frustration surfaces again and again: they cannot measure audiences across platforms in a way anyone trusts. Every platform has its own dashboard, definitions and incentives. A view on one is not a view on another. Engagement rate is calculated differently almost everywhere.
The usual workaround is a spreadsheet that normalises the metrics into one blended score. It looks rigorous and means very little. It tells you how each platform's algorithm treated your content, not who your audience is or what they think.
Somonitor takes a different position: stop trying to reconcile platform metrics, and measure the one thing that is comparable everywhere, which is what people say.
What is a shared concept layer?
Definitions
- Platform metric: a number defined by a platform, such as views or saves. Comparable only within that platform.
- Concept: a theme, tone, emotion or tension expressed in a post, regardless of where it was posted.
- Concept layer: the set of concepts tagged across all platforms you listen to, using one consistent model.
- Platform skew: how the mix of concepts on one platform differs from the overall mix.
Because SOMIN's concept engine applies the same model to a post wherever it appears, the concept layer is consistent by design. A post expressing "worry about price" is tagged the same way on a video platform as on a forum. That is what makes comparison honest. You can see how the concept engine fits into SOMIN's wider platform on the SOMIN for brands page.
How do you build a cross-platform read?
- Listen on every platform where your audience talks. Include forums and review sites, not only the big social networks. Many of the most candid conversations happen there.
- Tag with one model. Use the same concept engine across all sources so the categories mean the same thing.
- Report the overall concept mix first. What does the whole audience care about, feel and argue over?
- Then report platform skew. Where is a concept over- or under-represented? Short-video platforms may skew to aspiration; forums to problem-solving; professional networks to identity.
- Use platform metrics only within platforms. They are still useful for optimising content on that platform. They are not an audience measure.
A worked example
A skincare brand sees strong engagement numbers on short video and weak numbers on forums, and concludes its audience lives on short video. The concept layer tells a richer story. Short video is dominated by aspiration and routine-sharing, with mild positive emotion. Forums carry fewer posts but much more about ingredient worries and skin reactions, with anxiety and frustration attached.
Both are the same audience at different moments. The short-video audience is browsing; the forum audience is deciding. The brand's real gap is not reach on forums but answers to the anxious questions people ask there. That insight never appears in a blended engagement score.
Turning those anxious questions into content that can be found in search and in AI answers is exactly what our sister agency SNMRush specialises in.
What about audience size?
Teams still need a sense of scale. Use it carefully. Report the number of unique posts and, where possible, unique authors per concept, and be clear that this is conversation volume, not reach. Most people who share a feeling never post about it. Conversation is a sample of what the audience thinks, not a census.
This is also where cold-start problems bite. A new market or new product often has little platform data to optimise on. Listening to the conversation that already exists in the category, before you have your own audience, gives you a starting point. SOMIN's Fujifilm case study is a helpful read on bringing audience evidence into a category.
How does this connect with your other dashboards?
A concept layer does not replace your analytics. It sits above them. Paid media dashboards tell you what you bought. Platform analytics tell you how content performed. Somonitor tells you what the audience across all of it is saying and feeling, so you can judge whether the performance numbers point in the right direction.
When you find a concept that moves differently across platforms, read the posts. Our article on going beyond sentiment to tones, emotions and tensions explains how to interpret what you find.
How do you present this to leadership?
Leaders want one number, and a concept layer offers several. The compromise is a short page: the three concepts that grew most across all platforms, the one platform where your audience feels noticeably different, and the action you recommend. Add a line on what platform metrics say for context. Keep the evidence one click away. Over a few months, leaders learn to ask "what are people saying?" before "how many views?", which is the shift you want.
Platforms measure attention in their own currency. Conversation is the only currency every platform shares.
Checklist for a consistent cross-platform read
- All relevant platforms, including forums and reviews, are in scope.
- One concept model is applied everywhere.
- Overall concept mix is reported before platform splits.
- Platform metrics are kept within their platform.
- Conversation volume is not presented as reach.
- Every concept links to example posts from each platform.
Cross-platform measurement stops being a reconciliation exercise once you agree on what you are measuring. Measure meaning, and the platforms line up.
Frequently asked questions
Can Somonitor combine engagement metrics across platforms?
Somonitor deliberately does not blend platform metrics into one score, because their definitions differ. It compares platforms on a shared concept layer: the themes, emotions and tensions people express, tagged consistently by SOMIN's concept engine.
Which platforms should we listen to?
Wherever your audience talks candidly, which usually means major social platforms plus forums, review sites and community spaces. Forums are often under-weighted despite carrying the most decision-stage conversation.
Is conversation volume the same as audience size?
No. Most people never post. Conversation is a sample that reveals what people think and feel. Report it as volume of posts or authors, not as reach or audience size.
